“Overwhelming, but amazing” is how Cody Grana's mom, Dana Gamache, describes the support she has gotten since her only child was killed in a fiery car crash on Chili-Riga Center Road early Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of friends and family have flooded Gamache’s house and Cody’s Facebook page. Each has a story about Cody that still makes them laugh out loud.

"You can't say if your his friend you didn't get in trouble with him, you always got in trouble with Cody no matter what," Joe Mortillaro said.

"He was always just dancin' around the house and singing to himself all the time," said Gamache.

"He always wanted everyone to get along and be happy and was just a fun-loving guy. He was very passionate about life and loving and living everyday to its fullest," said Brittany Alexander, Grana’s girlfriend.

"He just did whatever he wanted. He was free spirited. He just always brightened up a room. No matter what you were doing, he always knew how to make someone laugh. He was a really great friend," said Kurt Krokenberger said.

Friends described the 19-year-old 2009 McQuaid Jesuit High School graduate as the smallest guy on the field who played with the biggest heart.

"I took him snowboarding in ninth grade. By the end of the year he was doing backflips on the snowboard. He was a gifted athlete. No matter what he did, no matter what he touched, he was good at it," Krokenberger said.

Grana was attending MCC for graphic design. He stayed close with teammates and friends from high school, and was with many of them Monday night.

Alexander said she left him around 11 p.m. and called him when she got home safe.

"I'm like, my 18th birthday's tomorrow. Dinner’s at 7:30, we're going out to dinner. He said, ‘Okay, I'll be there. I love you.’ I'm like, 'I love you too.' And then I got off the phone with him. He gave me a big hug when I left him and said, ‘Gimme a hug in case it's the last time you're ever gonna see me.’ I did. It's the last time I saw him," Alexander said.

Around 6 a.m. the next day, Grana’s car went off Chili-Riga Center Road and into a tree and burst into flames.

"I don't know if he fell asleep at the wheel. I don't know all the details. Kinda makes me feel like he did. I don't think he got enough sleep," Gamache said, "He's my only baby. My only baby."

Though their questions may never be answered, friends and family say memories of Cody's smile and spirit are helping to lift their heavy hearts.

"I just know that that kid was here for a reason," Mortillaro said.

"He's gonna be greatly missed by everyone," said Alexander.

Friends are planning to gather at Durand Eastman Park in parking lot B Friday at 8 p.m. for a candlelight vigil and balloon release.
