Two good Samaritans are lucky after police said they tried to break up an armed robbery outside of a Rochester grocery store late Friday afternoon. Police are now looking for the suspect who opened fire on them.

Police said two people were driving through the parking lot on Winton Road when they witnessed an armed robbery in progress. They said they drove their SUV to the back of the parking lot where the robbery was occurring, and started honking their horn. The suspect turned and fired two shots at these good Samaritans. Neither of the occupants inside was hit. Police said they were very lucky.

"The shots strike the vehicle once in the hood. Once in the window, and glass from the window appears to have struck one of the occupants of the vehicle," said Deputy Police Chief George Markert, Rochester Police Department.

That occupant was a 58-year-old woman who was sent to Strong Hospital with minor injuries. Deputy Chief Markert said this attempt to help the man being robbed was commendable, but dangerous.

“I think when a guns involved the best thing to do is call 911. Watch from a distance. Try to report as best you can through 911. Certainly, approaching someone with a weapon is certainly not what we would recommend. Very brave, but in this case, it almost had tragic results," said Markert.

Police are looking for a black male suspect in his mid 20s. He's 5'10” with a scruffy goatee, and at the time of the robbery, he was wearing a black tee shirt and black shorts.

Police said he ran from the parking lot and was seen getting into a blue Chevy Lumina. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

A Tops Friendly Market spokesperson released this statement:

"Tops is fully cooperating with authorities as they investigate an incident that took place in the Tops' parking lot on Winton Road on Friday afternoon. The store remains open, and authorities have cordoned off a section of the parking lot, allowing shoppers to continue to enter and exit the store. Authorities will provide Tops with more details when they have concluded their investigation."
