Paterson Rejects Latest Higher Ed Compromise

By: The Associated Press

Gov. David Paterson is rejecting the Legislature's latest compromise on his proposal to give New York's public universities greater autonomy and the authority to raise tuition without legislative approval.

Paterson spokesman Morgan Hook said the Legislature's proposal requires more work and more details before it is acceptable. Legislative officials say those details are already being
negotiated.

Austin Shafran, spokesman for the Senate's Democratic majority, says Senate leader John Sampson continues to negotiate for a plan to raise the national stature of the state and city universities of New York, while providing regular, modest tuition increases.

The Assembly's Democratic majority spokeswoman Sisa Moyo says the chamber never had an agreement with the Senate, but talks continue.
