Byron Celebrates Its Heritage
Classic cars, hot dog eating contests and fishing derbies sound like a traditional summer festival. In the town of Byron, Genesee County, the annual Heritage Festival is gathering where traditions run deep.
Some call it the social event of the year.
“There's not a lot that happens around here," said Tammy Alcott. "We're a really small town, very small population."
People wait anxiously for the parade to start. But the running joke is it'll be over before you blink.
“They have pools, like bets, to see who gets the closest," said Alcott. "Like three minutes? Twenty seconds? Four? It's really funny. But this year it was pretty long."
For the recently crowed Genesee County fair queen, her "debut” was a breeze.
"Today I rode on the back of the old fire truck, passed out candy and looked pretty,” Samantha Streeter said.
Byron’s "Big Money Bob" has been coming to the heritage festival for as long as he can remember.
"Everybody pretty much knows each other," he said. "It's a small community. Everyone basically gets along. It's rural; it's farm county, a lot of space between homes and that."
In Byron, summer's sights and smells never looked so good.
"Our community is really close, we're like a big family it's just one day when we can all come together and just hang out,” Streeter said.
