Race Honors Fallen State Trooper
Hundreds honored the memory of a fallen state trooper from Greece Saturday with a special race at Sperr Memorial Park in Big Flats.
Trooper Andrew Sperr was shot and killed in 2006 by two bank robbers. The park in Big Flats was named after the trooper and now hosts "Time to Sperr," an annual 10K, 3K and children's race. Family members say it's a great way to honor him even though it also brings back sad memories.
"We were down here the week after he was murdered, and I saw exactly where it all happened, and so, it brings back very, very bad memories," said Jean Sperr, Andrew’s mother. But you know I come to this park not only to honor A.J., but to all the state troopers. Because every one of them does the same thing A.J. did every day of his life. They go out and they put their lives on the line."
All the money raised from the registration fees go to park upkeep and new bathrooms.
