Body of Missing Boater Found in Seneca Lake
The Yates County Sheriff's Department, with the help of State Police, has recovered the body of Donald Roberts Jr., 44, of Burdett.
He was missing and presumed drowned following a boat accident Saturday evening.
Using side scan sonar and underwater cameras, search crews located the body 105 feet deep under water, near Juniper Point. The Sheriff says the body was found near multiple steep drop offs in the lake, as deep as 600 feet.
Police say Roberts, the owner of Glen Harbor Marina in Watkins Glen, was testing his high-powered speed boat Saturday with his head mechanic, Frank Carson, 34, of Odessa. Carson was driving the boat somewhere between 70 and 80 miles an hour when he turned and lost control.
Both men were thrown from the boat. Carson was later rescued by nearby residents. He suffered head and neck pain and a broken sternum.
Roberts’ body was identified by family members at the scene Sunday, according to the Yates County Sheriff.
Deputies say alcohol was not involved in the accident. They also say neither man was wearing a life jacket.
YNN spoke with friends and family Sunday who did not want to comment on camera though they did say they are upset and shocked by the news.
One man also said he is surprised Roberts was not wearing a life jacket.
