NEW YORK -- Democrat Andrew Cuomo has soared to an easy victory over Carl Paladino in the race for governor.

Cuomo was state attorney general for the last four years and is the son of Mario Cuomo, who served as governor of New York for three terms, from 1983 to 1994.

Cuomo enjoyed a commanding lead through most of this campaign and handedly beat Republican and Tea Party-backed candidate Paladino. While addressing supporters in New York City, he said his opponent's efforts to divide the state failed, and New York will unite and move forward under his watch.

"We're not going to let you separate us. Yes we have challenges. Yes we have to clean up Albany. Yes we have to get the economy running. We have to rebuild trust with the people. We are going to do all that because we faced worse before," Cuomo said. "We are going to do it together. We are going to be united -- that's what made this state this state."

Cuomo comes into office with the state held hostage by a historic financial crisis. Next year's budget deficit is projected at $9 billion.
