Lead Laws Changing Business at Consignment Shops
It's a recession proof industry: resale. But dealing with stiff lead laws can make it tough for children's consignment shops.
Lead laws now force consignment shop owners to research items that people bring in to check their lead levels against new regulations.
"A lot of people got out of it for that reason," said Lee Woodin, the owner of "Growing Again" in Spencerport. "It is definitely more demanding. The way it works now is if items that come in, they can truly not be more than a couple years old. We have to be able to research every item that comes through our door and assure that it is lead free."
Woodin adds that consignment shops these days often have as many new items as they do used items and clothes.
