There's never an easy age to fight cancer, but it can be especially difficult for teenagers.
The program, 'Teens Living with Cancer' helps support young people in that predicament, as part of the organization, Melissa's Living Legacy. Saturday the group held its second annual retreat.
It may look like your typical yoga class, but for many of these teens and young adults the workout is in the laughter.
Just about everyone in this circle is going through or has survived cancer. But it's the Dharma Rama retreat that gives them something to smile about.
"You should think about the good things rather the bad things," said Victoria Fortunato. "It just keeps your hope up."
Hope is one thing that's helped Fortunato along the way. We first met Fortunato at last year's retreat. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at age 13. Since then she started high school and is cancer free.
"I like meeting people who have gone through what I did," said Fortunato. "I just like hearing everybody else's stories. It's just interesting how different they can be but how similar they can be."
Dharma Rama has grown since last year. With the help of grant funding, it's been able to help even more teens.
"One of the most challenging things about cancer is to try to work your way through that journey," said program coordinator Leah Shearer.
The retreat focuses on active exercises that help the participants get a sense of what makes them feel good.
"You tend to lose touch with yourself when going through illness," said Shearer. "Each of these exercises is designed to help them trigger their own reaction or thoughts."
For college student Chirag Dave, the retreat provides support. He's currently in remission after being diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma last year.
"After you go through something like that you feel like you're alone but you find a lot of people are going through the same," said Dave.
The theme of this year's Dharma Rama is getting back to yourself and, in a true translation of the word, getting back to your own path.
