U of R Uses Recycled Plastic to Make Caps and Gowns
A new eco-friendly material will be used to produce caps and gowns for graduating
University of Rochester students.
The university said its students will wear caps and gowns made of fabric spun from 100 percent recycled plastic.
"We consistently hear from students that they prefer eco-friendly products. We're very excited to be introducing these gowns," said Maria Ferrante, general manager of the bookstores. "Not only are they better for the environment, but the fabric actually feels softer and more comfortable than what we've used for previous commencement ceremonies."
It takes an average 23 bottles to make each of the 1,500 gowns the bookstore estimates it will sell.
Students can turn the gowns back in after they are done with them to be recycled into new gowns.
