Bivona Child Advocacy Center in Rochester is working to help end the secrecy and shame of child sexual abuse.
This month, Bivona’s focus is its “Stand Up for Kids” campaign. The campaign is aimed at raising child abuse awareness, how to prevent it, and how to stand up for a child you suspect is being abused.
Ninety percent of children sexually abused are abused by someone they know. Every six minutes a child is sexually abused in the United States.
"We need to be able to hear it and not be in denial and then to report it to the appropriate authorities,” explained Mary Whittier of the Bivona Child Advocacy Center. “You can call Bivona; we have resources and a team that does this day in and day out."
If you suspect child abuse, you are encouraged to call the New York State hotline, 1-800-342-3720. You can also find a link to more than 20 child advocate agencies on the Sex Abuse Stand Up website.
