The Monroe County Legislature's charter committee made some changes to a funeral protest bill.
Legislators approved an amendment creating a 1,000 foot buffer for protesters at all funerals. The distance was originally 500 feet. They're also increasing the penalty to a misdemeanor charge.
Several veterans spoke before the vote in support of the changes, and were pleased with the outcome.
"We're happy with the way it went forward. I'm really happy that it's not down party lines,” said Ken Moore, president of Chapter 20 of the Vietnam Veterans of America. “Everybody agreed, you know, and I hope the full legislature does the same thing because it's the right thing to do."
The county legislature is expected to vote on the bill during its May meeting.
