Dozens of women are donating their time and efforts to help victims of the deadly tornado in Joplin, Missouri by donating their homemade quilts.
The owner of Ivy Thimble Quilt and Gift Shop in Victor knows that handmade quilts can help people cope with tragedy and loss. Trish Straight said that the colorful fabrics and patterns that go into quilt making have helped her and her friends through a lot of challenging times, and she wanted to share that with the tornado victims who lost everything.
Straight said within a couple days of announcing the project to friends and customers, donations starting piling up. Not only were cash donations given, but also sewing machines and quilting supplies for the Quilting Guild in Missouri that was also damaged.
"I have people call and say what do you want, and I tell them baby on up because you don't know who needs something out there, a baby from the hospital, an older person that was in a nursing home and lost it all, and we'll take any size quilt," said Trish Straight. "There's been a number of days when I've seen people bring in quilts and it just brings me to tears that they just give. And I have many a number of quilts there that are the first quilts they've ever made and for people to part with them I think is very sweet because we work hard on these quilts and to pick out the colors, to pick out the pattern, and then to do it, and then to give it away is just really, really touching."
Everything will be shipped to Ackfeld Manufacturing, a family business located in the town near Joplin. Trish buys some quilt hangers from them and knows that they will get the quilts to the people of Joplin who need them.
Quilt donations and money for shipping will be collected at Ivy Thimble located at 5 Railroad St., Victor until close Thursday. The quilts will then be packed and shipped to Joplin this weekend.
