A summer camp focused on empowering kids through sports is happening out at the College at Brockport this week.
Camp Abilities is a developmental camp for blind, visually and hearing impaired children. This year, 56 campers from across the state are playing dozens of sports.
There's cycling, track, archery, swimming and modified sports like "showdown" that is modeled after air hockey. Goal ball, an internationally recognized sport, is also a popular one. It's an auditory game; players listen for the ball and play offense and defense.
Many campers are playing sports for the first time. Ellie DeLucia from Hamburg, NY is visually impaired, she did so well in swimming, she is now on her school swim team.
"I am with other kids who are not visually impaired or blind,” said DeLucia. “I am a very good swimmer and I love going running with my mom. She likes to run with me so I am pretty good at track it is really good for me.”
Camp Abilities is in its 16th year. It is now offered in 11 other cities in the U.S. and in Costa Rica.
