Navy Week in Rochester has brought a large contingent of personnel from the United States Navy to the Flower City. They're making their presence known throughout the area mostly through community service.
"Let them know that we're here, that we're a part of their city and that we want to be good folks here and to give a little back here,” said Lt. Commander Todd Linskey. “The folks of Rochester don't see the Navy, we're not an obvious force here as the Army is and some of the other organizations. So it gives us a chance to put our face out there and give back just a little bit to the community."
In Greece, a group of Navy Reservists were helping out the Two Doors Community Resource Center. It’s an after school program on Dewey Avenue for students in Greece that need help academically. The Navy is back for the second time in three years getting the center ready for the upcoming school year.
"They're building cubbies in the back hall for our kids so they have a place to hang their coats and hats when they first come in so they don't inundate the kitchen with that kind of stuff,” said Debbie Haskins of Two Doors. “They're also installing a flag pole to hold a flag that we've had for almost two years waiting for a home."
Some of the reservists working at Two Doors are Rochester area natives. They say giving their time to hometown causes is something they enjoy.
"I know the people who we're helping; I do know the community,” said Charlton Harley, a Petty Officer 2nd Class from Penfield. “I do work in Greece and it's refreshing to know that we can actually get dirty and work hard to help the people we know and love."
Navy Week in Rochester continues through Sunday. Sailors will be out doing community service throughout the week along with finding some people that may be interested in joining that branch of the military.
The Navy band will be performing at various locations around the Rochester area.
