There’s a big game at Frontier Field and it’s not the Rochester Red Wings.
“It’s hard ball. It’s baseball. It’s the real deal,” said John Scarpelli, Rochester NABA League President.
The real deal for men age 28 and up.
“You got a lot of guys who played college ball, a few ex-pros, a couple of ex-Major Leaguers,” said Scarpelli.
“I’d like to think I’m one of the young guys,” said Mike Murphy, league player.
That’s especially true when 47-year old Murphy hits the field.
“Once the game gets going it gets competitive. You forget you’re out here for fun,” said Murphy.
Fun is why most of the guys play.
“We are all out here to win. Nobody’s out there to lose but we are all here to have fun,” said Casey Beeley, league player.
Many of the players have worked out in the offseason and played a good stretch of hard ball in the league’s five month season.
The Rochester NABA is made up of 30 teams. Tuesday’s match up the Americans faced the Nationals.
“It’s still in my mind, over-grown kids having a lot of fun playing the favorite game from our youth,” said Scarpelli.
Many had dreams of playing in the big league. But even in the reality of having a career change like Beeley, who is in real estate tax. These players refuse to strike out and let go of their love for the game.
“I do that during the day and I guess you can say I moonlight doing this at night,” said Beeley.
"It’s playing hard ball with good friends, can’t get any better than that,” said Scarpelli.
