He's considered one of the greatest student athletes, coaches and teachers in Rochester's history. Trent Jackson was an olympic runner who later played in the NFL. Jackson returned to his alma mater, Franklin High School to coach and teach in the Rochester City School District for more than 30 years. The school he gave so much to gave him something in return.
"Franklin rocks the house," The crowd chanted.
Before he was inducted into the Section V Hall of Fame for football, basketball and track and field as a player and a coach, Trent Jackson started out just like these kids.
"I haven't seen this since I was a little kid, since I was a ball boy, how many people came out," Trent Jackson Jr. said.
They came for the halftime dedication of Franklin's football field in Jackson's honor.
"From this day forward, be it knowN that Franklin's athletic field be known as the 'Trenton Jackson Athletic Complex'," Malik Evans, Rochester City School Board President said.
An honor for Jackson's family, but also the community.
"We lost pride," Jackson Jr. said. "A lot of the reason we lost pride is because we're not looking at our history. This, is a history making moment. Our history was built by it."
For former athletes like Thomas Evans, Jackson was more than a coach.
"He's a father to me. Trent Jr. had at least 1,000 brothers," Evans said. "He was like a father to a lot of us young black men who didn't have fathers in our lives. He was definitely a father figure to me."
Coach Jackson was also a motivator. His motto, "Be dedicated and never give up."
"Coach Jackson is the reason I'm coaching today," Garfield Ellenwood said.
Ellenwood ran for Jackson in 1993. Now, he's the assistant track and field coach at Mississippi State University.
"I remember sitting in his house in the trophy room when I messed up. He'd bring me over there to his house to talk to me about ability and the talents I had and that I had the opportunity to achieve those goals but I was going to have to make changes in my life," Ellenwood said.
Jackson had big dreams. A new field, with a new name, will hopefully inspire others to dream just as big.
