Fire ripped through a house on Rochester's Child Street early Monday morning.

The Rochester Fire Department says it started around 5:30 a.m. When fire crews arrived the house was engulfed in smoke and flames.

The fire department said it started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor and the attic. It took firefighters about an hour to put the fire out.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Two houses next door also suffered some fire and smoke damage. No one was injured. The fire destroyed the house.

“I woke up about maybe five-ish or so and I smelled smoke and I asked my husband to look around the house for it and see if he could find it but he could smell it and when I opened the back door all the flames were already shooting over. On the back porch the windows burst out, my kids toys are damaged, smoke is in the house and some of the electrical wiring in the house no longer works," said a neighbor, Lakisha Brown.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The American Red Cross is assisting the woman who lived there.
