A community came out in support of a Genesee County woman who is lucky to be alive after she became stuck in a farming auger in December.
Diana Beechler is able to share her story of survival. The 24-year-old remembers the exact moment she thought her life was over.
"I remember everything."
On December 7, Diana was working on a farm in the Genesee County Village of Elba. Her job that day was to unload corn from the grain cart of an auger, which is something she's done many times before. But that time, she lost her balance.
"There's like these ladder prongs that you step on - on either side of the cart, and I was stepping from one to the other to get out, and I just lost my footing and slipped," she said.
Time was of the essence.
"Quick thinking, just throwing my coat in to try and jam the auger. Anything to help stop it, and just hoping somebody would find me," said Diana.
Just minutes after she became stuck in the auger, a stranger passing by noticed smoke coming from the top of the machine. That man, who Diana calls her saving grace, ran to shut it off and noticed her inside. He then called for her help. His quick thinking saved her life.
"I looked in the grain bin. She was talking and she was strong through the whole thing and I just did what I had to do," said Matt Winspear, Diana's brother.
Emergency crews rescued her, but they were unable to save her right leg. Diana recalls them telling her about the injury, but she says it couldn't bother her. The mother of two was just happy to be able to make it home to her children.
"A relief because I had seen her for probably a half an hour that day it happened and I didn't see her again until the following morning. We got two kids," said Nicholas Beecher, Diana's husband.
On Saturday, the community held a benefit to raise money for Diana and her family. She now faces extensive medical bills and isn't able to afford a prosthetic leg.
Hundreds came out in support and Diana shared a special moment with the man who saved her life.
