Rochester General Health Systems announced it is reassigning its licensed practical nurses and will have only registered nurses attend to acute-care inpatient settings. LPNs will be assigned other duties.

The hospital says it will not lay off any of its 40 LPNs at RGH and another five at Newark-Wayne Hospital.

Hospital officials say the move is a part of a national trend towards keeping RNs with patients whose needs have become more complex.

"This isn't at all a cost cutting measure. It is really about patient safety and quality and providing the care that we need to provide. And again, it's not about the individual. It's about the scope of practice and what our license really allows us to do," said Cheryl Sheridan, RN, RGHS Chief Nursing Officer.

Those LPNs studying to become RNs will remain in acute-care settings if they complete their degree by 2014.
