Captain Fired from Sheriff's Office
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has terminated a jail captain originally charged with raping an inmate. This comes as charges against Catherine McLaughlin were dropped.
Assistant District Attorney Bill Gargan says Judge Vincent Dinolfo ruled last week that the final count of unauthorized use of a computer against McLaughlin be dismissed in the interest of justice. The judge says he finds the public interest would be better served by having that investigated internally by the Sheriff’s department.
McLaughlin faced 15 counts, including rape, after she was accused of having sex with a Monroe County Jail inmate. These charges were dismissed after a taped phone conversation between McLaughlin and the inmate surfaced where attorneys say he admitted he lied.
McLaughlin's attorney says investigators with the Sheriff's Office ignored red flags that there was something wrong with the inmate's testimony.
