A Waterloo man facing charges for a murder-for-hire scheme was in court Wednesday morning for a preliminary hearing.
State Police say 45-year-old Michael Hoffman attempted to contract a third party to murder one person and assault another.
A New York State Police investigator was the first witness to testify. He said he had two phone conversations with Hoffman before meeting him in Waterloo.
The investigator said Hoffman told him he lived with a married couple. Hoffman told the investigator he had a longstanding sexual relationship with the woman and he wanted the woman's husband assaulted. The investigator said Hoffman claimed the woman was having sexual relations with another man, whom he wanted killed.
According to court paperwork, Hoffman agreed to pay the undercover cop $2,000 to kill the woman's husband and $1,000 to break the legs of the second man.
Hoffman told the investigator that he did not have the money but would get it in a month or so. Hoffman also told the investigator he would get a shotgun from one of the intended targets and give it to him.
Police say Hoffman is charged with conspiracy and criminal solicitation in the murder-for-hire scheme.
The judge ruled that there is enough evidence to send the case to a grand jury.
