The Governor's Office has appointed Democratic Assemblyman Joe Morelle to the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council.

It's part of an agreement between the governor, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, and the State Senate leadership to include state lawmakers on the economic panels.

Morelle joins other community leaders on the council such as University of Rochester President Joel Seligman and Wegmans Food Markets CEO Danny Wegman.

Senate Majority leader Dean Skelos says elected officials should have input on development issues.

"We are appropriating the money and the decision shouldn't just be made by non-elected officials. The governor is part of the process, his administration is, and there's no reason why the legislature shouldn't be part of the suggestion process. but again it's dominated by non-elected officials," Skelos said.

The council is just one of 10 created by the Governor last year that compete for a share of state funding to support local projects.
