Monroe County Fire investigators are working to determine what caused a fire that burned down the rock-climbing wall at the Bayview YMCA in Penfield.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 3 am Sunday. YMCA directors say flames from the fire were shooting up to 60 feet in the air.

The five-sided rock climbing wall was always a major attraction for kids and adults -- especially during camp time. Camp started Monday at the Y.

Investigators say there is no official cause yet of the fire, but the wall was a free-standing structure with no electricity leading people to believe someone started the fire.

"It's disappointing to think that someone would want to harm the YMCA," said Adam Wallach, Camp and Youth Experiences Director. "Hopefully the people who are responsible for this will be identified, and ultimately we'll rebuild bigger and stronger."

Derek Smith who came to drop off his son Nathan, stopped to look at what was left of the wall. He said he couldn't believe it all happened just before camp was set to start.

"It's scary to have it happen the day before. It's almost like it was maliciously planned. You have to question what goes through someone's mind who would do that," said Smith. "It's heartbreaking."

Wallach said while insurance will cover some of the cost, it will not cover all the money needed to rebuild.

The Y is hoping to raise $250,000.
