The Rochester Police Department held its Chief on the Street event Wednesday evening on Arnett Boulevard.
During the event, Chief Jim Sheppard had a chance to talk with area residents one-on-one about crime issues the city is facing and possible solutions.
With the recent spike in violent crimes, Sheppard updated the progress of the Cool Down Detail. He said since the detail began a few weeks ago, police have been very proactive by engaging people on the street who are committing minor infractions.
"Since that point in time, we've had a number of shootings still going on, but I think our people have been very productive in terms of being out there on the street. One thing that I've noted is that since that time, we've taken about 40 guns off the street, and we hope to continue to do that because we know that contributes significantly to the violence we see out there everyday," Sheppard said.
Sheppard said it takes the police department and community working together to stand up against violence in their neighborhoods.
