The man accused of breaking into a Genesee County church over the weekend allegedly tried to escape from Jail Tuesday night.

John Cabrera Jr., 22, is charged with breaking into the Saint Paul Lutheran Church.

According to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office, a guard noticed Cabrera was missing from his jail cell just after 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Local law enforcement surrounded the jail, and after a half-hour search, the Sheriff's Office says Cabrera was found hiding in the building's basement.

Undersheriff William Sheron says the attempt will not be taken lightly.

"There will be extra precautions taken and the method he used to attempt this escape will be addressed immediately," Sheron said.

Cabrera was treated at UMMC for minor scrapes and returned to the jail. He is expected to be charged with escape.

It's the first attempted escape at the jail in more than a decade.
