The investigation continues in the case of a former Rochester police captain who shot his adult son to death in the Adirondacks last month. The death is being treated as a homicide.

State Police say Michael Leach was sleeping at the Clarks Beach Motel in Webb, Herkimer County, back on July 21st when he awoke and shot someone who he thought was an intruder. The victim turned out to be Leach's son, 37-year Matthew Leach, also of Rochester.

Leach used a police-issued handgun in the shooting.

"Other than to say the investigation continues, I do anticipate either moving forward with criminal prosecution in this case or bringing it to a Herkimer County grand jury to decide,” said Jeff Carpenter, Herkimer County District Attorney.

Michael Leach is currently an officer with the Perry Police Department in Wyoming County.
