“I found ‘em like two seconds before Taya was going down the slide,” said Rebecca Fili.

For Rebecca, it was mere moments before her two-year-old daughter could have suffered serious injury.

“I just saw something shiny sticking out from the bottom of the slide there, so I went and pulled it out and the spike was about that big.”

A little digging uncovered more spikes – four-inch long pointed rods, planted firmly at the bottom of each playground slide.

"Luckily at this point in time, no child has been injured,” said Detective John Condidorio, LeRoy Police.

Police don't have any idea who may have planted those spikes. It's a crime of reckless endangerment, but Condidorio says it could have turned out much more serious.

"Actually, it probably would rise to an assault, and maybe even a felony, depending on the situation – if a child had been hurt,” Condidorio said.

Both police and parents acknowledge that having diligence is just a requirement of good parenting, but they wonder: at what point do things like weapons at playgrounds, become too much?

"I've never ever gone to a playground and worried about something being on there, hidden like that,” Fili said. “Now I'm a little bit scared."

And Rebecca is left shaking her head, pondering how someone could so seemingly want to hurt a child.

"You know, as a parent you worry about perverse thoughts. The only reason keeping me in a small town is because you know everybody, but then once in awhile you think maybe, 'that person' will come through here.”
