Rochester City School District Superintendent Bolgen Vargas handed out free books to city school students before Thursday night's Red Wings game.
Thursday, the summer ROC Reads program wrapped up. The program is designed to reward city school students who read throughout the summer.
"In the Rochester City School District we have a serious challenge. The challenge is too many of our students are not reading at grade level, and we believe the community and families have a role in that is encouraging our children to read during the summer," said Vargas.
Vargas was also honored at the game by given the opportunity to throw the first pitch at tonight's game.
