One person is seriously injured after crashing into a garbage truck in Genesee County Thursday morning.
Sheriff's deputies say a man driving a pickup truck on Bloomingdale Road, in the Town of Alabama, crashed into a waste management truck around 8:15 a.m.
The garbage truck operator was out of his vehicle loading garbage into the truck when the crash happened. Deputies say he was not injured and yelled to the driver of the pickup to get out of his vehicle.
Witnesses say the truck burst into flames moments after the man got out.
Mae Shafer was driving behind the truck and saw the crash happen.
"The waste management gentleman told him 'get out of the truck,' the gentleman got out of the truck, ran across, well tumbled across, the street, got as far as the mailbox right there, I ran up the road to him, and I assisted him over to this area until we got medical attention," said Shafer.
Deputies say the driver of the pickup truck, Charles Scorse, 22, of Hamlin, was airlifted to ECMC with serious injuries.
Deputies are still investigating the cause of the crash but believe fatigue may have played a role.
