County legislator Rick Antelli went before the Town of Greece Zoning Board of Appeals on August 21st, looking for a use variance for a building he owns on Latta Rd.
While being questioned by board members about the need for that variance, he told them about an ongoing investigation into the town. YNN obtained this audio recording of the meeting.
ANTELLI: “A lot of that information should stay right within this board, because there is an FBI investigation going on about that. I really can't elaborate on that.”BOARD MEMBER: I'm sorry I missed that part. In regards to what?
ANTELLI: I'd rather not say.
He later tells the board again.
ANTELLI: "And there's an investigation going on and I'm a federal witness. Make sure you mark that down."
We asked Antelli for more information about that investigation. He told us he could not talk about it, and said there was nothing he could comment on.
An FBI spokeswoman also told us no comment, but said the agency routinely interviews people and issues subpoenas following up on information.
That's what sources tell us happened in Greece. Some town officials and Greece Police officers have been questioned and town and police papers turned over to federal agents.
Sources tell YNN that the investigation may be connected to a 2003 incident involving someone who was then a town employee.
The Greece Police Department was under investigation in 2009 and 2010 after allegations of misconduct and wrongdoing against a former officer, a sergeant and the former police chief. All three are in prison.
Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter says this investigation is not of his department. In a statement, Baxter said:
The policies of the Department of Justice are to not comment on investigations or the potential for investigations and the Greece Police Department respects that guideline. That being said, I will state that as a law enforcement agency, the Greece Police will always assist and cooperate in any investigation. I will also state that the Greece Police Department, specifically, is not under federal investigation.
Town of Greece Chief of Staff Jeff McCann only referred us to the Greece Police Department comment, and said nothing further.
We spoke to several members of the Greece Town Board and others in the town who said they could not comment on a ongoing investigation or simply did not call us back.
