Anniversary of the Attica Prison Riots
September 9th marks 41 years since the beginning of the deadliest prison uprising in our nation's history.
Forty-three people died during the Attica Prison riots in 1971.
Inmates demanded a series of changes at the prison, which in part what led to the riot. They wanted more minority employees and better living conditions. Another contributing factor was overcrowding.
A retired Attica warden says the riots were inevitable. It led to a turning point in corrections throughout the country.
