Construction is officially underway on the future Golisano Children's Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The $145 million hospital will be attached to the medical center.
More than 100 people attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the 245,000-square-foot facility. It will includes eight floors of care for children and their families.
The new hospital will have a 60-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, pediatric imaging and 52 private pediatric rooms. There will be a playdeck, rooftop playspace and even a healing garden. It also includes a new hospitality suite that parents can use to shower, eat home-cooked meals and even do laundry.
The hospital says that it's about providing care with the latest technology, and is also designed for families by providing a soothing and comfortable space.
"When you come to this atmosphere and see those ten children, you talk to the staff, doctors and nurses and what this facility will mean to the children of Rochester and surrounding areas, it is hard not be wowed. When you make the committment, that is a little wow, but when you come to this enviroNment and know that this is where it is going to be, that is a wow moment," Golisano said.
There are plenty of financial naming opportunities available as part of the $100 million campaign that is underway to support the new facility.
The hospital is expected to open sometime in 2015. There will also be room to create a new pediatric surgery unit three to four years from now.
