Police have made an arrest in the shooting death of a city teenager earlier this summer.
The Rochester Police Department is crediting the community with helping make the arrest, and the victim's family members are hoping their tragedy will become an example for others.
Police arrested Chonice Stewart, 20, Wednesday. He's charged with second degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Raven Cooper. Stewart pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Thursday morning in Rochester City Court.
Police say the shooting happened after an argument July 1st on Bay Street. Cooper was taken in a personal car to Rochester General Hospital, where he later died.
Cooper's mother said her son was enrolled in the city's North S.T.A.R. Educational Program and was moving on to positive things. She hopes no other mother has to go through this.
"A lot of people did come forward and gave their input on what they saw and what happened. This guy was on the run. He wasn't thinking about turning himself in," said Cooper's mother, Mahagony Dodd. "People need to come out and speak. Nobody wants their child to be gone."
Stewart is being held without bail and is due back in court later next week.
