Primaries normally would have been held on Tuesday but with it being September 11th they were moved to September 13th.

The Contests

137th Assembly Seat

The heated race is between three Democrats for the newly redistricted 137th Assembly seat.

Longtime incumbent David Gantt has served more than 30 years in Albany and is facing his first primary challenge in some time.

Last month a judge shot down a challenge to petitions by two of Gantt's challengers.

One of them is Jose Cruz, who used to serve on the Monroe County Legislature before being elected to the Rochester City School Board.

The other challenger is John Lightfoot, who is a former Rochester City Council member, who now serves on the county legislature.

133rd Assembly Seat

Another race is between two Republicans who want to run for the new 133rd Assembly district, which includes four towns in Monroe County and all of Livingston County.

Monroe County Republicans have endorsed conservative talk show host Bill Nojay. He has previously served as RGRTA commissioner and is an attorney.

Conservatives went with another candidate, endorsing former Avon Mayor Richard Burke.

Party chair Tom Cook says he knows Burke and likes his small business background.
