The Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed to YNN that it is now sampling the air in the Wyoming County Village of Attica, searching for possible harmful chemicals resulting from the foul smell in that village.

This is the monitoring device the EPA installed at Attica High School on Thursday. The school is just a half-mile down-wind from local company Hillcrest Industries, which is blamed for the smell.

Hillcrest has come under fire in recent months, as the foul odor has been emanating from its large pile of recyclable glass. Hillcrest uses the glass to make small reflective beads, used in road paint.

Hillcrest has agreed to stop using the glass, but the giant pile remains on company property.
Residents say the smell, described as a "burning garbage odor," has ruined their summer, forcing them inside with windows closed on hot, sunny days and breezy nights.

The EPA tells YNN it will monitor the air in Attica for 24 hours. Village leaders call the testing "progress." They stated that they hope a solution is found soon.
