PENFIELD, N.Y. -- The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Ann Reddington, 71, of Shadow Pines Drive, in Penfield, died after a garbage truck hit her late Monday morning. It happened just before 12:00 p.m. in a private neighborhood which backs up to Shadow Pines Golf Course.

Investigators believe Reddington was at her mailbox. They say a Suburban Disposal garbage truck was backing up and struck her. That was confirmed by the trash collecting company's operations manager. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

"They do beep. Now see, they go up the street where they don't have to and they get up there and there's a "T" and you have to back up the hill; But they make a lot of noise and it's pretty hard not to see a garbage truck so she had to be distracted or something," said neighbor Jack Kench.

Friends of the victim say she recently had surgery and they were to have lunch with her. They tell YNN they arrived for that lunch shortly after the accident happened.

"Her faith was always front and center for her and brought that faith to others and showed it every day, every minute.," said Anne Shanahan.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
