Families move out to avoid fallout with Hillcrest Industries

With the smell in the village of Attica failing to improve, some residents there are taking the next step: they're moving out. YNN's Geoff Redick tracked down one of those families, and has our story.

ATTICA, N.Y. -- Jacquie Kellner-Hicszewski has been fighting for months, pushing for solid proof that the smoldering pile of recyclable glass at Hillcrest Industries is making her sick.

"Right now I'm on albuterol for breathing," explained Jacquie.

But, with Hillcrest still smoking, Jacquie is moving.

"I just want to be a little but further away at this time, and this is just my first step," added Jacquie.

This is the most drastic step so far, in a protest that saw its first picket line on Friday.

"It's going to be the new style. Everybody's going to have a gas mask on before you know it, if nothing's done. I mean, you guys are breathing, how's it feel? Doesn't feel very good, it's uncomfortable," exclaimed George Carrick, a protestor.

Just up the road from the protestors, Hillcrest's giant pile of recyclables is visibly smoking. Earlier this week, the Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed there is plastic burning within the pile.

Village and town officials heard the complaints this week. But, with enforcement not controlled by the EPA, there is little they can do. And, the only man who can do something about the pile has been invisible.

Dan Kirsch, Hillcrest owner, has been consistently unavailable to speak about the issue. However, EPA investigators were spotted coming out of the plant Friday morning, which is a sign that the issue may finally get moving.

But, it is not moving fast enough for some.

"I'm just happy that we have somewhere to go, and that I can just actually pick up and leave, if I need to. So, I'm just ready to go," said Jacquie.
