A South American yogurt maker celebrated the official grand opening of its first North American manufacturing facility. Alpina Foods opened its doors at its new Batavia facility for the celebration.

The plant is in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park and will employ at least 50 people.

"This is a momentous day for Alpina," said Julian Jaramillo, Alpina's CEO. "We would like to recognize the many people and organizations across the state that have helped make this moment a reality. We are excited to get started and continue to grow along with our employees, the region and the yogurt industry in New York."

Governor Cuomo recently said he wanted New York to 'own the yogurt industry.'

Alpina Foods makes yogurt and other dairy-based products and has global sales of more than $800 million.
