Just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, search crews found the body of a person in the basement of the building, which had been gutted by fire.
“That was probably not where she was, because everything fell. She probably was up in her apartment. That’s what we’re thinking right now,” said Undersheriff Greg Randolph of Wyoming County.
The body has been sent to the Monroe County Medical Examiner to be identified.
“Two plus two is kinda equaling four, in this case. It probably is Lorraine Qutermous,” said Randolph.
Qutermous lived in the second floor apartment above her restaurant, Lorraine’s Place. She was last seen Monday night. Those who know her also expect the worst.
“It’s going to be a big loss for us, and a real sad day. She was a real friendly girl. She always spoke in the morning to us,” said Esther Dake.
“I loved her, and she was a wonderful lady,” said Claire Rablee.
Investigators don’t know what caused the death, but now, they’re turning their attention to what sparked the fire.
“Everything is on the table right now, and that’s the way we’re going to leave it until something points to one way or the other,” Randolph said.
The town and village offices in the building have been moved to the bank and insurance agency across the street. They will be open Thursday. Court will continue proceedings on October 15th in the Fire Hall.
