Court Clerk Arrested for Falsifying Records
A former court clerk in the town of Avoca, Steuben County is facing charges following an investigation by the State Comptroller's Office.
The Steuben County Sheriff's office says, Shawn Wellington, 41, is charged with felony falsifying business records, official misconduct, and petit larceny.
Deputies say the arrest follows an investigation by the sheriff's department and the State Comptroller's Office after about a dozen irregularities were discovered during an audit.
They say Wellington allegedly took cash that a patron paid for a traffic ticket and deleted the entry from the court database to hide the fact that she stole the money in August of last year.
She was removed from her position as court clerk in September of last year.
Wellington is scheduled to return to court next month.
