The Penfield Fire Department is honoring a former St. Joseph's School student for her message about fire safety.
The department awarded the seventh grader with a ride to school on a set of wheels usually reserved for the crew.
Joan Crowley, a 7th grader at Siena Catholic Academy in Brighton, got get quite the unique ride to school Thursday.
A Penfield Fire Department hook and ladder truck picked her up at her home and took her to school.
It is the Fire Department's way of saying thanks. Joan won second place as a 6th grader last school year at St. Joseph's School in Penfield in the New York State Fire Prevention and Life Safety Essay Contest.
Her mom, Claudette, practiced fire drills with her children starting at a very young age, as early as two years old, and then shortly thereafter the family experienced a real fire in their home and the children knew exactly what to do.
Joan wrote about the experience in her essay, helping her receive second place.
