It’s good news for 55,000 RTS customers who ride the bus daily, getting to or from downtown Rochester.
The new RTS Transit center will provide an enclosed facility for its customers. It will be located on Mortimer Street between South Clinton Avenue and St. Paul Streets. It will span an entire city block.
The majority of the funding for the $50 million project comes from Federal Transportation Administration funds. Fare will remain the same – a bus for a buck.
“This is a great news for RTS customers; great news for the community,” said Bill Carpenter, CEO of RGRTA. “As I’ve said before, the Transit Center is a game change. It’s going to change the way people view public transportation and use public transportation.”
The project will create some 400 construction-related jobs, and RTS plans to hire add 50 more people.
The official groundbreaking will be in November, and the Transit Center is scheduled to open in mid-2015.
