Police in Newark said officers were called around 5 a.m. to 608 Silver Hill Road, a rural area in the southern part of the village, for the report of a person shot.

When officers arrived, they found a 42-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his buttocks. Police said the bullet exited near the victim’s pelvic area.

The victim was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital with what police describe as a serious injury; however, police believe it is not life-threatening.

Police say the victim may have been targeted.

“I believe he may have known the person or of the person. The person had knocked on the front of the house and he yelled at the person, I’ll meet you in the back, and he went to the back, and when he got to the back, he saw through the window the person had a gun. When he turned to flee from the door, the person shot through the door," said Chief David Christler of the Newark Police Department.

Four other adults were in the home at the time of the shooting and police said they are cooperating with the investigation.

The victim’s stepfather declined to give him name or appear on camera, but he told YNN it was a terrifying experience.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is assisting in the investigation.
