A Rochester police officer came across a shooting victim early Sunday morning on the city's northside.

It happened on Lake Avenue near Ravine Avenue shortly before 2:30.

Police say an officer was on patrol when he heard gunshots and saw a man stumble across the street in front of him and collapse. Investigators say the 37-year-old male city resident was shot multiple times in the torso.

He was taken into surgery Sunday morning at Strong Hospital.

"Again this just shows the level of violence we're experiencing as well as the safety of our officers out there," said Rochester Police Lieutenant Frank DiPrimo. "The officer was in close proximity when this event happened and he could have very easily been brought into it. And I'm glad that he's okay and hopefully the victim will be alright as well."

Police are still investigating a motive for the shooting.
