Rochester mayor Tom Richards commented Tuesday about the New York Post article claiming that Rochester is close to bankruptcy. He said, Rochester is not.
The article says the city is faced with runaway labor costs, pension and education costs, and a shrinking property tax base.
The mayor says he's had to cut city services and staff. He says budget challenges are not a new problem, and that it's something that needs to stay on the states agenda.
"Governor Cuomo and his people recognize his problem and we have had discusssions with it," said Richards, (D). "We are not at some kind of odds with him, the article tries to that because it is fun, but that is not where it is. This is a tough problem. I do not expect the state of New York to solve it all in one swoop and I don't expect us to say that we automatically have an easy solution."
The article also named Syracuse and Yonkers as cities close to bankruptcy.
