Cleanup Begins on Canandaigua Waterfront
Contractors are on hand for a cleanup of the Canandaigua waterfront. Crews are putting up markers and barriers to cordon off the work site at Kershaw Park on Canandaigua Lake.
The beach at Kershaw Park was closed to swimming July 18th when a sticky, tar-like substance washed up on shore. Tests were conducted to determine what the substance was and where it came from.
Old crank case oil from vehicles used in a landfill dating back to the 1920s and 30s is the likely origin of the substance.
Later this week, crews will set up pumps to remove water so they can begin working on removing all of the material.
The State Health Department says it will remain off-limits to swimmers until Canandaigua has an "Exposure Mitigation Plan" approved and appropriate cleanup has taken place.
