The Irondequoit Police department made history Tuesday night when it swore in its first ever female Lieutenant.

Jonna Izzo, a 24-year veteran of the IPD, says she owes a lot to her family for always being there and supporting her efforts.

Izzo says she thinks women bring a different perspective to the job and is excited for the opportunity, and to continue to serve the town of Irondequoit.

"It's hard to believe I'm the first female lieutenant for the town of Irondequoit, that in 2012 women are still achieving firsts; but, I'm glad it's me, and, I hope I've paved the path for many more female officers to come,” said Izzo.

Lieutenant Izzo says she hopes young girls see this, and know that being a police officer is a great career.
