State Ordered to Pay Former Inmate After She was Raped by Guard
A judge ruled that New York State must pay a former inmate at an Orleans County State prison more than $600,000 after she was raped by a guard.
Court of Claims Judge Philip Patti says the woman was raped by former corrections officer Donald Lasker at the Albion Correctional Facility in 2007, then put in solitary confinement, supposedly for her protection.
The judge ruled that corrections officials did not protect the woman from the guard even though he was already under investigation for allegedly raping another inmate, and they further traumatized her by putting her in solitary confinement and not providing her with medical treatment and counseling.
Lasker was later fired and sentenced to two months of weekends in jail.
The woman, who was from the Albany area, was in prison for violating probation after she was convicted of unauthorized use of a credit card.
The state was ordered to pay her nearly $607,000.
