RIT broke ground Friday on its new hockey arena that will be three times the size of the current 44-year-old Ritter Arena.
The Gene Polisseni Center will be home to Division I men and women's Tiger hockey.
Construction is expected to take two years and hold 4,150 seats. The new arena will have luxury suites and an NHL-sized rink.
"For many people around the country, this arena will be the official face of RIT as they watch the Tigers compete on a national stage," said RIT president Bill Destler. "For thousands of hockey fans, who will travel to this campus with their favorite teams, they will come to a stunning new facility that offers comfort and style that is on par with the team's competitive level."
The opening for the center is planned for the 2014 to 2015 season for the Division I men's and women's hockey teams.
